Real Student Stories

GLA has made a real impact on the lives of real students in our local communities.

Meet Jackie Thurmond

Jackie’s high school experience was very traumatic.  When she was only 14 her mother was a gunshot victim. Although her mother survived, her recovery took a very long time.

During this time, Jackie became pregnant and, although she returned to school after the baby was born, she was diagnosed with both MS and congestive heart failure. All of this resulted in her dropping out in the 10th grade.

Jackie had been a good student and always wanted to finish high school, go to college, and make her mom proud. When a co-worker told her about GLA, Jackie decided to enroll in the GED program and finish what she had started.

She studied hard, but experienced failure twice and her confidence and self-esteem were low. However, she continued to find the help and support she needed from the staff and tutors at GLA and finally earned her GED.

Now that she has her GED, she has been accepted into the nursing program at Greenville Technical College where her goal is to become a registered nurse.
