Frequently Asked Questions
Our volunteer coordinator is happy to talk you through the process of becoming a instructor at GLA. Use the form at the top of this page to contact us.
We ask our instructors to commit to at least one full semester, which consists of 14 weeks of classes, with a minimum of 90 minutes per week. We are incredibly grateful for those instructors who volunteer with us year after year. If you decide that instructoring may not be for you, we’d be grateful if you could complete your first session. This helps us provide a smooth experience for our students as we find a new instructor.
We want to meet your preferences. If you’d rather teach a full class, up to 15 students, or you feel that one-on-one instructoring is right for you, speak to the volunteer coordinator and together you’ll find the best fit.
We offer classes in English as a Second Language (ESL), Basic Math, Reading and Writing Skills, and GED™ preparation. Additionally, enrolled students have access to introductory computer classes, providing essential digital skills alongside our core programs.
Please let us know as soon as possible so that we can schedule a substitute to cover your classes. In addition, if you’d be willing to add your name to the substitute list, let us know!
Absolutely not. The most effective ESL classes are taught solely in English.
While some of our instructors are current or former teachers, we also have great teachers who come from all professions and walks of life. A teaching credential, while helpful, is certainly not necessary.
