Real Student Stories

GLA has made a real impact on the lives of real students in our local communities.

Meet Gia Ferrer

Gia found out about GLA because the Sullivan Center’s registration had closed and they told her about our program. She only had the Math portion left to pass. She talked to our GED Program Manager Vera and begged her to allow her to get individual tutoring. The Math instructor she had was great and she credits him for helping her pass her final section of the GED. She decided to get her GED now because she wants a better job. She has worked in health care for 5 years as a Patient Care Tech and Med Tech in nursing homes.  She also wanted her GED so her 4 children would have something to look up to and so she could be a good example for them. The advice she would give other students is that: “There’s no time limit. It’s not a race. You can do it at your own pace and time.” It took her several years of studying and building up the courage to take the test.

She wants to thank her mother and fiancée for their support. On the morning of her test her fiancée told her that she could pass, and it meant so much to hear him say that. When they first started dating, he would see her studying late until 1 or 2am. She’s so happy that her hard work and persistence paid off. She’s already applied at Greenville Tech in the criminal justice program. On the weekends she plans to study at Kenneth Shuler as an aesthetician. She’s also applied to be a behavioral therapy assistant but needed her GED to be able to work for them.  The future is bright for Gia!
