Janneth heard about Greenville Literacy Association through her cousin Sherley, who earned her GED with GLA in December. Originally from the Philippines, both women needed a GED to continue their education in the United States.
A certified massage therapist for 15 years, Janneth began thinking about a career that would be less physically demanding as she gets older. Earning her GED was the first step toward that goal—and an opportunity to challenge herself and keep learning.
Janneth’s dedication quickly impressed everyone at GLA. She logged so many independent study hours online that staff had to double-check that the number was correct! She credits ProLiteracy’s online learning platform with making it possible to study wherever she was, often using her phone and squeezing in lessons whenever she had time.
Although Janneth didn’t enjoy school when she was younger, this experience was different. She approached learning with a new attitude and discovered that she genuinely enjoyed it. She is especially grateful to her instructors, including her math teacher, Mr. Barnett, for supporting her along the way.
With her GED complete, Janneth is looking ahead to her next goal. She hopes to begin training at Greenville Technical College next fall and is considering a career as a sterile processing technician.
