Real Student Stories

GLA has made a real impact on the lives of real students in our local communities.

Meet Shirley Dayton-Schaffer

Sherley moved to South Carolina with her partner and 8-year-old son in June of this year. They’ve been together for 11 years and lived in 10 different countries. She was born in the Philippines and met her partner when he came to vacation there. She decided to enroll at GLA because she wants to go to college. She chose our program specifically because she read great things about GLA from reviews on Google Maps. The most difficult part she thought would be Math, but it ended up being RLA because there was so much reading on the test. She thought English was her favorite subject, but she really loved her math and social studies classes the most because of her fun teachers.

She passed the Science GED subject test on her own, without needing a class. She knows she needs to excel in science because she’s going into the medical field. Her advice to students interested in getting their GED is to: “Go for it. Be consistent. Come to class no matter what. Also, you need to study at home because coming to class isn’t always enough.” The book, the teachers, Vera’s encouragement, and her own determination helped get her through all the subjects in only one semester. She also obtained the S.C. Digital Literacy Certificate while taking Liz’s computer class. She’s now more confident with her digital skills.  She wants to thank everyone at GLA for being supportive and encouraging. She likes how friendly the teachers and staff are, and she finds everyone at GLA very approachable. Now that she has her GED her next step is to go to Greenville Tech for Medical Laboratory Technician or Radiologic Technology. She’s already filled out the application!
