Real Student Stories

GLA has made a real impact on the lives of real students in our local communities.

Meet Abbie Howery

Abbie wanted to get her GED to get a better job outside of restaurant work and advance her education. The most difficult part was staying motivated after working 15-hour shifts and finding time to study. She reminded herself that with hard work, she could pass her tests and prove to herself and others that she was capable. While studying, she moved up from server to kitchen manager, managing the stress of work and school with help from her instructors and encouragement from the GLA staff. She is now an Assistant General Manager at just 19. Abbie’s other interests include a side hustle on TikTok as part of a Creator Affiliate Group, where she has already earned $500. Her dream is to open an online fashion business while making extra money as a day trader, and she has also considered law school. Her advice to new students is: “Enter the process with an open mind because a lot of people at GLA left school early. Don’t do it if you aren’t going to apply yourself.”
