Rotary Family Literacy @ YWCA (Augusta St)

The Rotary Family Literacy Center at the YWCA opened in November 2004 with the financial support of six Metro Rotary Clubs for renovations and furnishings.  The YWCA staff provides professional childcare while parents attend their literacy classes. The center was originally managed by volunteers and Americorp Vistas. The Board of Directors voted in October 2007 to add the Rotary Center as an official staffed learning center.

Rotary Center – Volunteer Appreciation Highlight

Cherry began volunteering at the Rotary Family Literacy Center as an ABE group tutor in October 2012. She teaches basic reading and writing and loves both the work and the students! Cherry began volunteering at GLA upon hearing a recommendation at a Rotary Club luncheon. Prior to her retirement three years ago, Cherry resided in Paramus, New Jersey and worked as Director of Operations Planning for Elizabeth Arden in New York City. She loves Greenville and her volunteer work and hopes to recruit some of her fellow retirees to join the great crew of tutors at GLA!

Rotary Center Update – Fall 2012

Rotary eliminated all names on its waiting list and enrolled adults for new student orientation and computer lab time. Similar ads were also placed on Craigslist and Volunteermatch.org … (read more…)

Rotary Student Success Story – Barbara

Rotary proudly salutes Barbara, a student with a burning desire to succeed and the inner strength to overcome obstacles. Partially deaf and blind since birth, Barbara left school after the seventh grade, finding the bullying unbearable. Now in her late 40s, Barbara is moving full-steam ahead to attain her GED because she wants a better life for herself.  Despite a severe visual impairment that cannot be corrected with glasses, Barbara is a quiet, tireless student, who is at the learning center four days each week, working 3-4 hours in the classroom and the computer lab each day. She has forged a bond with her tutor, Lillian, a retired educator, who like Barbara, is tireless, highly motivated, and just as apt to scoff at obstacles.  In the year that … (read more…)
